![]() Flies, angels and occasionally bees play a role in the theatrical installations of Russian conceptual artist Ilya Kabakov (b. 1933). Born and raised in the Ukraine during the period extending from Stalin to Gorbachev, Kabakov began his career as an illustrator in Moscow in the 1950s, and went on to collaborate on over 150 children's books. At the same time, he worked on his own personal projects. Kabakov left the country in 1987 and settled in New York in 1992 with his wife and collaborator Emilia. His works, drawings, paintings, installations and theoretical texts, in which he assimilates his traumatic experiences under the constraints of a perverse political system, combine to recount a story: that of an artist under the Soviet regime, disenchanted with a project and society that failed. With his subtle Jewish humour, he creates a highly personal universe, far from the heaviness of socialist society. As a counterpoint to his works, the film offers glimpses of daily Russian life, which at times appears like an installation by the artist himself. Interviews with Ilya and Emilia Kabakov underscore the film's biographical and political duality. Biography Niels Bolbrinker studied photography in Hamburg before receiving a diploma in visual communications. He works as a cameraman for television productions. In 1978, he co-founded the Wendlaendischen Filmkooperative. Kerstin Stutterheim is full professor as well as director of the Institute for Art Research at the HFF Potsdam-Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, and a documentary filmmaker.
