NOTES ON PHOTOGRAPHY

The film's title, Notes on Photography, is an allusion to Walter Benjamin's famous essay, A Short History of Photography, in which the word "aura" appears for the first time to define the specific nature of an artwork. The concept as defined by Benjamin is well known: with the rise of new artistic disciplines like photography and cinema, art can be reproduced ad infinitum, thereby losing its sacred character, its "aura." At first enigmatic or personal, the artwork becomes more and more accessible and its meaning generalized. Aware that film is a fragmentary art, director Jan Knutzen searches for its "aura" by weaving a web of connections and affiliations based on personal photographs found in his attic.

Biography
The techniques of Jan Knutzen stem from the Norwegian documentary traditions of the 1960s; since 1984, however, he has developed his own, more reflective, essay form.
