DEATH VALLEY SUPERSTAR

The star of Michelangelo Antonioni's 1970 cult classic Zabriskie Point was discovered on a street corner in Boston, after thousands were auditioned for the part across America over the course of a year. Antonioni was looking for someone to play a young rebel willing to die for the revolution. They found a man who wouldn't have to act: he was living the role. In a few short years, Mark Frechette (1947-1975) would go from international stardom and the cover of Rolling Stone to death in prison at the age of 27. Death Valley Superstar traces out the tragic destiny of this non-actor whose actions in life are mirrored in a single film role. He remains suspended between stardom and oblivion, a Hollywood oddity framed forever at the age of 21.
