| OLIVER SACKS: TALES OF MUSIC AND THE BRAIN |
| United Kingdom/2008/Betacam/colour/50 min/english | |||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() British neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks (b. 1933) has devoted his life to the study of the brain. His many books are filled with compelling accounts of his patients. His latest, Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the Brain, examines music's potential as a therapeutic aid for neurological patients with serious afflictions. Alan Yentob accompanies Sacks as he visits some of his most remarkable case studies. In upstate New York, Yentob encounters the inspirational Matt Giordano, who has suffered severely his whole life from Tourette syndrome. Amazingly, Matt has found a way to stop his tics: by playing the drums. Tony Cicoria, a respected orthopedic surgeon who was struck by lightning in 1994, suddenly developed an insatiable passion for playing the piano-despite having no interest in the instrument or in classical music before the accident. Then there is Derek Paravicini, blind, autistic and needing round-the-clock car-and a musical savant whose astonishing talent on the piano leaves Yentob speechless. Biography Louise Lockwood graduated from the Glasgow School of Art. She began her directing career ten years ago with the Channel 4 program Vids, and has gone on to direct several documentaries on the arts for BBC Scotland. Filmography Réalisatrice pour les séries ou émissions Hollywood Greats, The Edinburgh Show, Scotland on Film et The Culture Show ; Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives (2007). |
