Synopsis

This film comes on the heels of Alberta artist Chris Cran’s solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. Cran is renowned for his humorous self-portraits and his talent for playing with perceptions and perspectives by combining pop art, photorealism, abstraction and pop art. In an interview between Cran and Bruce McCulloch of Kids in the Hall fame, the artist talks about his creative process and his concerns about the art world. This documentary by Gary Burns muses on the temporary nature of exhibitions and how they act as a placeholder in an artist’s career by juxtaposing the pragmatism of the teardown of an exhibition with the philosophical and intellectual questions that underpin Cran’s work.
