Evoking the intellectual and artistic vibrancy of New York in the 1960s, this film portrays a neglected contemporary sculptress, one of the few women who stood alongside Robert Morris and Bruce Nauman, and whose life was tragically cut short in 1970. Interviews with major figures in the art world are mixed with archival footage, photographs and excerpts from Eva Hesse’s voluminous journals, which give us an understanding of what she was thinking and feeling, adding a deeply personal and emotional touch to the portrait. This documentary, the first by American director Marcie Begleiter, is an inspired and conscientious account of a woman whose life was driven by a rich creative energy.
