American artist Jenny Holzer’s medium is language. Known for her LED signs and giant projectors, she transforms interior and exterior spaces into textual landscapes, questioning our perceptions and the ways we are influenced by media and politics. An in situ artist above all, she has installed her trademark luminous signs on city streets since the 1980s. In this episode of director Claudia Müller’s Femmes artistes series, Jenny Holzer employs her favourite techniques in an exhibition presenting the works of 24 women on a moving LED video wall. Her aim: to illustrate all the different fields and styles of female art throughout history.
Born in Bergneustadt, Germany, in 1964, Claudia Müller studied German literature, journalism and arts in Berlin and Cologne. She worked for filmmakers Peter Greenaway and Krzystof Zanoussi. Since 1991, she has worked as a television journalist and director on numerous film portraits, videos, interviews and documentaries. She is interested in the visual arts and has made many films about artists, from Jenny Holzer to Kiki Smith, Shirin Neshat, VALIE EXPORT and Cindy Sherman (Die Zeit).
