Erratic flashes of light spark across a flickering expanse of water and sky. The image itself can’t be contained as light and debris spill outside the frame. The random alchemy of hand-processing techniques creates a landscape that transcends the observable, edging into the sublime. Gibraltar Point (transformed) was created during a residency at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island.
Based in Ottawa, Penny McCann’s approach to image-making employs a range of formats and gauges: digital video, Super 8 and 16mm film, and more recently, hand-processed techniques. Penny attended the Independent Imaging Retreat (aka the Film Farm) in Mount Forest, Ontario, in 2008 and 2010, and through this opportunity, expanded her vocabulary to include deeply resonant hand-processed 16mm imagery. Gibraltar Point (transformed) (2017) is her 4th hand-processed work.
