Benoît Rossel’s documentary is an indulgent portrait, with a touch of irony, of a mysterious occupation that is as often venerated as it is reviled and decried as imposture. He looks at the careers of major Western artists such as Valérie Jouve, Julie Mehretu, Ayako David-Kawauchi and Lawrence Weiner. By questioning the ambitions, doubts, strategies, compromises, lean times and good years of artists who epitomize the entire profession, the film presents a lively, playful and moving allegory of the figure of the artist in today’s society.

Benoît Rossel

Benoît Rossel was born in La Garenne-Colombes, France, in 1969, and holds dual Swiss and French citizenship. He is a graduate of the École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne (ECAL). Since 1997, he has been a professor in the visual communication department at ECAL.
