Synopsis

Presented in partnership with ICI ARTV and the consulat de France à Québec

The year 2016 marked the 500th anniversary of the death of one of Holland’s most celebrated painters: Hieronymous Bosch. A contemporary of Da Vinci, Bosch was at the crossroads of mediaeval symbolism and Renaissance humanism. His authenticated works are rare: twenty-five paintings and eight drawings, all exhibited in the world’s greatest museums. In this sensitive and poetic portrait, we enter the imagination of the painter via the techniques of animation. Through the superb visual effects created by co-director Eve Ramboz, the paintings come to life, displaying all their beauty and power. By decrypting his works in the context of his time, the film lifts the veil on the man and his beliefs; it also examines the relationships between Bosch, the Church and science in an age in which these two visions of the world were starting to clash.
