After buying an exceptional maple lot, Swiss instrument maker Pierre Louis made a promise to a colleague from his former school. With the wood from this lot, which came from a single tree, he would make four instruments for a string quartet: two violins, a cello and a viola. Inside his studio, the camera of director Christophe Ferrux follows his gestures, captures the sounds and subtle choreography of a skilled craftsman at work. Over the seasons, between the silence of the workshop and the music of Aurèle Louis, the instruments come to life. A meditative portrait of this remarkable craftsman, which not only chronicles the birth of these four instruments from the same family, but records their very first notes together, as performed by the Casals Quartet.
Christophe Ferrux lives in the Haut-Jura, the mountainous region of France near the Swiss border. He has been making documentaries for some 20 years, with a preference for portraits of unusual people: hermits, people living in isolated places or off the beaten path. He also collaborates on the television programs Chroniques d'en haut and Côté jardin broadcast by France 3, for which he has made numerous documentaries in Europe and overseas.
