Synopsis

Quebec Premiere – Conversation lead by Nicole Gingras, artist in attendance (Montreal only)

With the use of visuals, Niro has collaged photographs together to give a sense of what is important and sacred to Haudenosaunee people. She wanted to create something joyful, emphasizing a positive stand using music and sound making. It is the direction her thoughts take after working on visual art that look at history that is not very pleasant.

Shelley Niro, member of the Six Nations Reserve, Turtle Clan, Bay of Quinte Mohawk, is a multidisciplinary artist who defies stereotypical depictions of the First Nations. She is a prolific director counting 15 short and feature-length films and videos. Ranging from 2003 to 2017, the following 5 short videos highlight her discrete, yet direct way of addressing crucial questions relating to identity, memory, land and mourning in a lucid and dreamlike fashion.
