Synopsis

The multi-talented painter, poet, musician and performance artist Reza Derakshani invites us into his house and studio in Austin, Texas, where he talks about his world, his music, poetry, painting and myriad influences. The many places he has lived and worked, including Iran, United States and Italy, have played a major role in shaping his work. As the artist prepares for a retrospective exhibition at the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg, he outlines his artistic vision, stressing the importance of freedom of expression in both art and society.

Macha Tsarenkov is a filmmaker and producer based in New York. Following studies in art history and art business, she began to explore film as a way of looking at artists in a personal setting. Reza Derakshani, The Breeze at Dawn is the first in an ongoing series of shorts about artists working at the confluence of East and West. She has also produced music videos, including Sofi Tukker’s Drinkee and Awoo, and the Avalanches’ Because I’m Me.
