North American Premiere

“I want to do what I like! I especially don’t want to do what I don’t like! Of course, that’s how you should live, not how you should work.” These words were spoken by Simone Signoret, a decidedly free woman who rejected any limitation imposed on her throughout her life. Making its North American premiere, this documentary by Michèle Dominici is a magnificent portrait of the actress and her fascinating life. Multiple interviews reveal a liberated woman, well ahead of her times.

Michèle Dominici found the idea for her first film whilst reading The New Scientist, as she was working at the Science Museum in London. « Le Clitoris, ce cher inconnu », broadcasted on Arte in 2003 was the first documentary film about this taboo. It was to set the tone for her futur creations all of which demonstrate a strong preoccupation with transmission and emancipation, in other words, politics. Came along afterwards the portrait of an irreverent French health minister « Léon Schwartzenberg, le révolté », an exploration of 1968 youth movements around the globe, « 1968, Un monde en révoltes », a saga of the British suffragettes, « Suffragettes, Ni paillasson, Ni Prostituées », an observation of parity in progress in the highest spheres of political power in France, « Madame la Ministre », an investigation about a false evidence, « Dépression, une épidémie mondiale », a portrait of the French fashion photographer, « Bettina Rheims, la fabrique des icônes », and finally, the story of a woman who chose to age freely, « Simone Signoret, Figure libre ».
