Thomas Ostermeier is one of the leading figures in today's European theatre. Steeped in the great tradition of German performing arts, he is particularly interested in contemporary restagings of the canonical works. His productions are at once grandiose and intimate, constantly renewing the theatrical experience for artists and audiences alike. In this film by Jérémie Cuvillier, we see the rehearsals for The Seagull, which premiered in Lausanne in 2016. We also witness Ostermeier’s insatiable desire for dramatic excellence and truth as he takes hold of Chekhov’s play, schooling the actors in the complexities of the text. With the help of an acting method devised by the director himself, the eight actors assume their roles in a very personal and authentic manner

Jérémie Cuvillier

Jérémie Cuvillier began his career in 2001 as an assistant to directors renowned for filming live performances. After his first live theatre recording for ARTE in 2008, he made various artist portraits, live programs for the Internet and television documentaries, all relating to the stage: opera, theatre, music. Filming the directors and actors, seeing the power and seduction games that unfold—this is what provides the framework for his stories.
