The Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto made a name for himself in the fashion world after he burst onto the scene in the 1980s with his all-black creations. Directed by Akiyuki Sakai, this documentary reveals what lies behind the creation of what might be the septuagenarian designer’s final collection. With generosity and simplicity, Yamamoto opens the doors to his workshop, immersing us in his world of frenetic creation.

Akiyuki Sakai

Akiyuki Sakai joined NHK in 2002. He focuses on social issues and politics in Japan and elsewhere. He has made programs about presidential elections in the United States and Russia. He has also made programs in diverse areas including architecture, medicine (cancer and euthaniasia), the Great East Japan Earthquake, and sports. In 2015, he became interested in the fact that young Japanese people who opposed national-security legislation were influenced by ideas from the world of fashion. He consequently began investigating the connections between fashion and society. In 2016, he began researching the fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto.
