As the 38th edition of FIFA successfully presented Spotlight on Iranian Art Films last March, the Festival continues its exploration of Iranian arts and art films, in partnership with MOMENTA | Biennale de l'image. This initiative, supported by the Conseil des arts de Montréal, was made possible thanks to director and curator Leila Khalilzadeh, Montreal-based Iranian filmmaker who has directed, written, and produced short fiction, animation, and documentary films.
Through her selection of films, Leila Khalilzadeh drew on the experiences of the pioneers and new generations whose work is unrestricted to any one cinematic convention or mainstream style.
"As self-referential as it can be, cinema itself is a regular subject matter in Iranian films. Sometimes it’s to investigate the history of cinema and to depict the portrait of a filmmaker, and at times to tackle the very process of filmmaking as a theme within narrative works. Moreover, it sometimes stands somewhere in between, presenting a hybrid world of fiction and non-fiction, which I believe, is a signature of Iranian quality cinema", explains Leila Khalilzadeh.
We wish to extend the collaboration with Leila Khalilzadeh, so that she can continue to introduce us to Iran through selected artists. Several different genres are presented: cinema, documentaries, as well as animated or experimental short films, which makes them an exceptionally rich and diverse program.
Please note that while some films are free and open access, others are on a pay-per-view basis.
