The International Festival of Films on Art celebrates Christian Dior's legacy at the McCord Museum

The International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) and the McCord Museum are pleased to continue their collaboration to recognize the exceptional contribution of designer Christian Dior to the world of haute-couture. Following successful programming of films celebrating fashion, photography and the expression of identities through art, at the museum over the past three years, this fall, FIFA offers three documentaries on this mythical figure and his fashion house, in conjunction with the McCord exhibition, Christian Dior,  which will open on September 25th.

From examination of his sketches and fashion designs to exploration of his career path and personality, Dior is honored by the selected documentaries which highlight the revolutionary work of the man often referred to as the “couturier of dreams,” who sublimated women around the world and inspired generations of fashion students. The screenings will take place in the J. A. Bombardier Theater at the McCord Museum, on three Saturdays this October.

Free activity. Registration required.
Museum located 690 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal. McGill metro station or bus 24.

Christian Dior: The Man Behind the Myth (Christian Dior, le couturier et son double)
Directed by Philippe Lanfranchi
France | 2005 | 52 min. | In French

1947. Against all odds in a post-war France, a young designer imposed his vision of women and elegance on the whole world. Christian Dior restored French fashion to the predominant position it had held before the war and quickly became a legend. In 10 years, he fully transformed the face of haute couture, but the man himself had nothing of the extroverted, flamboyant fashion designer about him. Christian Dior was a simple reserved-looking man, uncomfortable with his socialite status. His childhood in Granville, the image of his mother as well as his passion for flowers and architecture were all major influences that eventually reconciled him with his double persona shortly before his untimely death in 1957. The Drawings of Christian Dior (Les dessins de Christian Dior)
Directed by Loïc Prigent
France | 2017 | 52 min. | In French

In the 1950s, Christian Dior reinvented the female silhouette. The bold lines of his beautiful drawings reflect 10 years of teeming creation. Loïc Prigent exhibits Christian Dior's sketches, carefully preserved in an undisclosed location in Paris. The documentary immerses us in the effervescence of the 1950s and post-war fashion. Rich in anecdotes and intimate moments, this foray into the world of Christian Dior brings to life the first sketches, idea books, and drawings of this creator of unclassifiable modernity. REGISTER.

Bouquet final
Directed by Erwan Augoyard and Sophie Kovess-Brun
Belgium | 2019 | 73 min. | In French

Presented as a Canadian premiere at the 38th edition of FIFA, this documentary film portrays Kevin Prat-Irien, Ester Manas, Gabriel Figueiredo and Olivier Maire, four students studying fashion at La Cambre, one of the world’s most renowned schools, as they create the end-of-year collections that will elevate them from the status of student to that of creator. A bittersweet documentary that shines a light on these emerging designers, brimming with ideas and filled with doubt, but determined to pursue their dreams. More than a classic documentary about young people eager to pursue a career in fashion, Bouquet Final takes a societal look at an entire generation. REGISTER
